At Tanner Speed Academy, every athlete begins with a comprehensive speed assessment that provides an objective picture of their current performance. Rather than relying on a single sprint time, we evaluate the different qualities that contribute to game speed.
Our testing battery measures acceleration over the first 10 meters, maximum sprinting speed, change of direction ability, multi-directional agility, and repeated sprint performance. Using professional timing gates and standardized testing protocols, we collect accurate data that allows us to identify an athlete's strengths, weaknesses, and individual speed profile. This objective approach ensures every training program is built on measurable performance rather than guesswork.
Why We Test
Testing helps us identify exactly where an athlete can improve, allowing us to build training programs based on objective data rather than assumptions.
Every athlete has a unique speed profile. Some excel in acceleration but lack top-end speed, while others sprint fast in a straight line but lose valuable time during changes of direction or repeated high-intensity efforts.
By measuring these different qualities individually, we can design training that targets each athlete's specific needs instead of using a one-size-fits-all approach.
Turning Data into Better Performance
Collecting data is only the first step. We analyze every result to build an individual speed profile for each athlete. These insights allow us to create targeted training programs that focus on the areas with the greatest potential for improvement.
Whether an athlete needs to improve first-step explosiveness, top-end speed, braking mechanics, agility, or speed endurance, our testing provides the roadmap for more effective training and measurable performance gains.
Regular re-testing throughout the season allows us to monitor progress, adjust training when necessary, and ensure every athlete continues to develop speed that transfers directly to performance on the field.

Monitoring Progress
Speed development is an ongoing process. By repeating our testing throughout the year, we can objectively track improvements and evaluate whether the training program is producing the desired results.
Rather than relying on subjective opinions, athletes can clearly see their progress through measurable performance data, helping them stay motivated and focused on continuous improvement.
