In modern football, explosiveness is a game-changer. Whether it's beating an opponent to the ball, jumping for a header, or making a sharp directional cut—players need power and speed. That’s why training for explosiveness is essential in youth soccer and athletic development.
At Tanner Speed Academy, we’ve put together three simple, effective drills for players aged 14 and up that help develop explosive strength safely and progressively.
Why Explosiveness Matters:
Explosiveness combines strength, speed, and coordination. It improves sprint starts, vertical jumps, and quick reactions—crucial for positions across the field. It also reduces injury risk by teaching the body how to control force efficiently.
The Drills:
-
Step Jump
This drill enhances rhythm and forward propulsion. Players begin with one foot in front of the other and push off forcefully, focusing on quick, controlled landings. -
Diagonal Jump
Designed to boost lateral power and balance, this exercise teaches athletes to move explosively side to side, staying light on their feet and centered in movement. -
Twisted Diagonal Jump
A challenging coordination drill where feet land in opposite lanes. It builds reaction speed, body control, and rotational power—skills often overlooked in youth soccer training.
How to Use Them:
Add these drills 2–3 times per week after warm-up. Focus on quality over quantity, and allow recovery time between sets. They're best suited for athletes already familiar with bodyweight strength exercises.
Final Thoughts:
Incorporating these drills into your players' training routines will lead to better acceleration, jumping ability, and directional speed—key elements in every youth sport. Want to see exactly how they’re done?
