Starting with the November 2026 issue, Fußballtraining is publishing a three-part series on speed training by Tanner Speed Academy founder Carsten Effertz.
Fußballtraining is Germany's leading magazine for football coaches. Now in its 44th year, it is the official coaching magazine of the German Football Association (DFB) and reaches coaches at every level, from youth football to the senior game.
The series is called „Schneller am Ball“ (Faster on the Ball). It builds on a continuing education course Carsten delivered for the BDFL, the association of Germany's licensed professional football coaches.
Part 1: The Fundamentals of Speed Training
The first article, „Schneller am Ball: Grundlagen des Schnelligkeitstrainings“, starts with a simple observation: athletic qualities matter more and more in modern football. Bundesliga players regularly reach top speeds of 35 km/h and more, and that is only possible when time is invested in speed in training.
Carsten explains which factors coaches need to consider, and shows simple exercises that lay the foundation for top speed at every level, including in the youngest age groups.
Parts two and three will follow in the next issues of the magazine.

The Key Message for Coaches
“Speed development doesn't happen by chance. It requires a clear methodology, purposeful training design, and a long-term approach. Simply running fast is not enough. We need to coach players to become faster.”
— Carsten Effertz
This is the same approach behind everything we do at Tanner Speed Academy, from our online courses to our work with professional clubs and youth academies across Europe. Seeing it presented to coaches in Germany's leading coaching magazine shows that structured speed training has become an essential part of modern player development.
Where to Read the Series
The articles appear in the print and digital editions of Fußballtraining. Part 1 is also available online for FT+ subscribers: read the article on fussballtraining.com.
